iTunes Top 100 Downloads: #25
6.20.2007
Take a look at the Top 100 iTunes downloads for the week of 06.17.07, specifically at #25. Every song on the list is from a new artist with a single that just came out recently. However, at #25 we have one of the all-time most nauseating power ballads, Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin.’ I’m not posting this to offer my opinion on the song or to rip people’s taste apart but rather point out what a powerful tool television shows have become in pushing music to new audiences. ‘Don’t Stop Believin” was the song used in the final episode of The Sopranos and there is no question that the use of this song is the reason it is being downloaded so much. I was talking with my friend who is in a band trying to get a deal and he was telling me that most bands he tours with focus more on getting their music television airplay than on record sales since more money is in television today. To get to the point, I wonder what the direct results are of a song being used on a TV show or commercial. Entourage for example tends to use a lot of hip-hop in their episodes and I remember one episode hearing them use Danger Mouse and Jemini’s ‘Ghetto Pop Life.’ I’d be curious to know if Lex Records saw an increase in sales or downloads after that aired.
