The Delfonics on the Von King Park Stage
The Delfonics
Von King Park, 07.05.07
Yes, I know what many of you are thinking. I know that this may not be the original Delfonics trio from the 60’s and I realize that one of the new members was probably conceived while Sound of Sexy Soul was spinning on his parent’s record player. Still, their music is timeless and if you have a remaining member left, many fans will feel some sort of connection left with the group.
Clearly any fan at this free show in Von King Park felt a connection to The Delfonics as the rain was coming down hard the entire show. Unfortunately the rain resulted in a smaller crowd but it didn’t have any effect on their performance. Opening with ‘Ready or Not Here I Come,’ they rekindled their classic falsetto sound with choreographed moves and glittering suits. The first two songs were slightly off key but when they worked their way into ‘Break Your Promise’ they found a groove and were all on the same page the rest of the show.
The hour long set included covers from Billy Preston and Teddy Pendergrass and you would think the original Delfonics were on stage when they sang ‘When You Get Right Down To It.’ I believe they also did ‘Trying to Make a Fool of Me,’ before closing out the show. To nobody’s surprise, the final two songs were ‘Didn’t I Blow Your Mind This Time’ which had the crowd on its feet and ended with ‘La La Means I Love You.’ It should be noted that William Hart is changing with the times as “now I don’t wear a diamond ring//I don’t even have a song to sing” is now performed as “I don’t even have the bling bling.” Despite heavy downpours the entire night the group came through strong and gave me a chance to catch one of the greatest classic soul groups of all time and see the pioneers for much of the music coming out today.
